our new house

hopefully in the next week or so we will be closing on our new bungalow!

we've had our eye on this house for a year now and finally decided to take the leap before selling the house we're currently in.

the bungalow is going to need a lot of love and work but we've got it to give. i'll post new pictures as some of the rooms start coming together.

come see us. we have a nice big porch to sit on.

and a few more porches to choose from out back.

the master bedroom. we hope to pull up the carpet, add new curtains / blinds and paint right away.

part of the living room. we both love the book shelf. the fireplace has gas logs.

the dining room is probably my favorite in the whole house. i love the beams on the ceiling and the built in china cabinet. it's going to take a lot of work to strip the paint off those beams but i'm ready. and we need a new light fixture in their as well.

over the weekend i checked off a life accomplishment by running my first (and probably last) marathon.

26.2 miles of fun, kiddos.

despite some sage advice from David Thompson, i chose the Derby Festival Marathon as my target. i'll say here, for the record, that he was right. it is not a good place to do your first (or any, if you ask me) marathon. it's hilly, it's hot, the last 15 miles are like running through a ghost town.

regardless, i finished. it took me 4.5 hours and a lot of walking from miles 18 through 25. today, three days after finishing, i am finally starting to feel back to normal.

here are some snaps from my iPhone after the race.

Coury met me at miles 14, 20 and 26. it was awesome to have her, my friends and my family there to cheer me on. Couldn't have done it without them, no doubt.

Coury also ran a hundred yards or so with me in her rain boots!!! i couldn't believe it. i'll never forget the image of her and i running side by side, holding hands, her in artsy rain boots. unforgettable.

Stevie, my boss and good friend, ran the last .2 with me, encouraging me all the way. Earlier in the day she smoked the miniMarathon and hung around to cheer me on. she helped me train through the winter and spring and I couldn't have done it without her either. plus she let me write as much as i wanted about running, which i'm sure half the community got tired of reading about. thanks Stevie! (she also brought me that beer you see in both pictures. despite all the water and fruit I ate that day, the beer made me feel better than anything)

so i wrote a novel...

on August 25th i set out to write the first draft of a novel. it's something i've wanted to do for a long time but it never really seemed plausible. something struck me around that time and i got to work.

i picked up a book coury had called No Plot No Problem and it had guidelines for writing a novel in a month. i followed the guidelines for daily word counts and soon found myself days ahead of schedule. three weeks into the project i had a 50,000 word novel (roughly the length of Catcher in the Rye).

the book encourages making a giant mess of the first draft, not worrying about correcting spelling mistakes and obvious holes in your plot. the point of the month long marathon is to get the story out of your head and onto paper. if you like your story, you can spend the next few decades whittling it down into a wonderful work of literary genius.

coury is now editing the 174 page manuscript into what will hopefully be something publishable one day. i feel pretty strongly about certain parts of the book but others will definitely be changed for the better.

here are the answers to some commonly asked questions so far:

what's the book about?
the book is based loosely on things that happened during my college experience. More specifically it's about a guy trying to start a writing career while encountering love and weirdos along the way. No, Coury is not the inspiration for the love interest. The love interest is entirely imagined.

what's the title going to be?
i have no title yet but i did end up naming the file A Cool Blanket of Clouds. i'm not sure if that will stick.

can i read it?
yes, you can read. After I've made some revisions. If you want to read a seven page excerpt, let me know. if you boo and hiss loud enough i may just put it in a drawer forever, never to be edited again.

i have an idea for a second book and actually started writing it three days after i finished the first novel but my head felt like it was going to explode so i put it down for a while. the setting in this book will more closely resemble my homeland.

coury left town a few days after we got back from the honeymoon. she went off to score advanced placement exams in louisville for a week.

just for fun, i told people it only took two weeks of marriage before coury left me. most women found that quite humorous.

the wife returned this afternoon, much to the delight of her new husband and her favorite feline friend moe. two of her favorite guys spent the day cleaning house and doing laundry (instead of golfing!) to make sure everything was nice when she returned.

moe and i bonded this week while we held down the bachelor pad. i broke my own rule and fed him some table food and he occasionally curled up beside me in bed.

you can tell by the picture, however, who he favors and how glad he is that she's home. i can't say i blame him.

please do not subject your animals (especially cats) to family portraits, people. cats do not listen to directions such as "tilt your chin down" or "smile pretty." cats are inherently independent and will purposefully ruin an otherwise nice family picture if you try to give them direction, as moe the happy cat so illustrates here.

of course, moe's "weight problem" and "excessive balding" may make him a bit insecure in front of the camera. i know i don't enjoy looking at pictures of myself and i am neither "eating my family's budget" nor "picking out my own hair" per se.

heed my advice: no cats in family portraits.

her students have said she will go from sounding like a hip young teacher to sounding like an old, crabby woman. i tend to agree.

i've asked her a few times to consider keeping leathers but she insists she will be honored to take my family name.

i asked her today if she wanted to have a memorial for her last name after the wedding. she agreed we would. it's the best way to transition from 'ms. lethes' to 'mrs. o.'

besides, everyone knows i'll be mr. coury leathers anyway. i'm no fool.

the saddest day in a long time

Yesterday Mary Alice "Grammy" Graves left behind her loving family and husband of 58 years at 2:15 p.m.

She left peacefully, surrounded by a room full of family, after a year long bout with cancer. Her spirit never wavered, even in the darkest most painful times.

Below is her and Jimmy "Papaw" Graves on their wedding day. Below that is her celebrating the newest addition to the family, Michelle Graves. Below that is she and I on Saturday, celebrating my cousin's wedding.

We'll miss ya Grammy. We hate to see you go.

yesterday while emptying the dishwasher, i accidentally chipped coury's favorite mug.

it was the mug i would give her full of tea or hot chocolate if she were feeling sick. it was the mug i would give her if i wanted to cheer her up.

"perk up plod plod," she would say when i handed to her. it always made me smile.

it is the second time i've broken coury's favorite mug. in fact, those two are the only two mugs of hers i've broken. it must be a subconscious attempt to rid her of possessions she may favor more than me.

to commiserate the mug, i am encapsulating it here at drunk on light.

sorry cour. we'll get a new favorite mug.

the turtle man

The Turtle Man is a local and state legend here in Kentucky. He's also been gaining some national attention from doing radio shows and he even got a shout out on CNN from some soldiers. The Turtle Man is a growing phenomenon.

I've heard a lot about the Turtle Man and seen some videos he's been featured in but I had the pleasure of meeting Ernine Brown, Jr. on Saturday afternoon.

I almost left without getting a picture or autograph from the legend but I remembered to get a snap shot before I left. Here's me and the Turtle Man. He's got big guns to go along with his rebel yell. Also notice the snapperlicious shirt in the background.

Make sure you visit his site, www.turtle-man.com. Buy a shirt while you're there and check out his videos. I promise you've never seen anything like it.

Despite the fame, Ernie's a great guy and really in touch with nature. He's had pets of all sizes (squirrels & deer) and he uses the catch-and-release method most of the time while hunting turtles. You won't meet a better person.

Meet the Ang family.

Wiqan, Suk and Kai were passing through my little corner of the world today so we made a breakfast date. Best decision I've made in a long time.

The Ang's are on their way back to Cambridge, Massachusetts as I write this, hopefully on a peaceful and safe journey.

Wiqan and I attended WKU together. He's one of the best shooters I know. His mind and talent will take him very, very far.

It's been at least three or four years since I've seen Wiqan. I can count on one hand how many times we've spoken in that time period. He was the first person to call me when I announced I was freelancing two years ago. His tips have been invaluable.

Seeing him and talking a little bit of shop was very energizing and a cause for hope in a slow time. Just looking at a few of his pictures got my creative juices flowing. Listening to his stories of doing more personal work made me realize I need some of that myself.

Wiqan and family, it was such a pleasure to see you. Kai is a great kid and I'm sure his little sister will be just as much fun. Good luck in your travels and endeavors. I hope to see you before you leave again.

Last Saturday (March 14, 2009), Blues on Tap closed its doors and left a hole in my heart.

Luckily, it already had a plan to fill it by giving me my wonderful fiancee.

Blues was a progressive bar in our little town, home to those looking for something more than a Bud Light and a breezy conversation. It's definitely one of the coolest, if not the coolest bar, I've ever been to. It didn't hurt that my name (along with many others, including my fiancee's) was nailed to the bar, forever inscribed on a plaque.

What's even more special, my name plate sits next to Coury's (my fiancee) right where we met. Blues on Tap is where the flint struck the steel and ignited our relationship. I can never thank James Spragens enough for that.

After a seven year run, James decided it was time to close the doors and pass the torch to someone else who has dreams of owning a bar. I hope James feels like his dream of owning Blues was successful. He created an atmosphere not only unique to our town but unique to many places in the eastern half of these United States.

Thanks for the memories James and all the patrons & staff of Blues on Tap through the years. We will be forever searching for another Blues on Tap...

You see that hand with the beer bottle? Yup, that's where we met. Stupid hand is occupying our space.

4 years and 5 months later, Coury and I spend our last night at Blues together. She claims she came there before we met, I claim the place as my own. I know I'm right.

This was a barn burner of a game folks. North Hardin fell after two overtimes to Adair County.

North is the most talented and athletic (and tall) team I've seen all year. However, Adair is the most disciplined and fundamentally sound team I've seen all year. Somebody said after the game, "How do you not win the region with all that talent?"

It's a legit question. North has guys on the bench that would star anywhere else. It just wasn't in the cards for the Trojans this year.

coury woke up to a broken shade tree. she's still sad about her shade being reduced.

last night brought in a good amount of ice. i forgot how damaging ice storms can be. stupid ice.

the driveway is nearly barricaded by droopy limbs. a chain saw would be a nice thing to have right now.

the front yard is full of debris as well. cars have been stopping all day to pick up the freshly fallen limbs. i've cleared the yard once but that didn't suffice.

stephen was kind enough to shoot the boy's game for me on saturday, as i went to etown to cover the girls game.

it turns out i had enough time for both, though i missed the entire first half of the boy's game. stephen continued shooting while coury and i sat on press row to take notes and watch the season opener.

i have no idea what i'm explaining or saying but it looks very intense. i hope whatever i was saying was eloquent.

i don't think coury was joking when she said she didn't want to go. she was exhausted from shopping all weekend. BUT, she will do anything to hang out with me if we haven't seen each other, as was the case this weekend. isn't she nice?

this little lady shayla received a new wig today. here's how it all went down:

apparently some little kids laughed at her outside of a small town drug store because she didn't have any hair. shayla has a rare form of cancer and is undergoing chemo. her big sister, aubrey, was with her and told her parents and grandmother.

grandma wrote a letter to the editor at our paper about it, asking parents to teach their children about cancer. the letter sparked this hair salon owner's generosity and she donated a wig to shayla.

as you will see, little shayla is pretty stoked.

it's fair season, ya'll.

i have a new appreciation for dental hygiene after tonight's outing. thank you coury for using tooth paste and floss. you'd be amazed at what can happen when you don't.

this is the first of many nights at many different fairs. i'm looking forward to it.
